Tell us about yourself:
I grew up in the 7th District (Bushwood). This is where my mother and father also grew up, and their parents as well. I still live there today.
I am married with two teenage boys, Bailey & Blair, and one 'princess', Ryleigh. When I'm not working (which is rare), I am either at the baseball field, the race track, or the stables, or running between the three, to watch my kids.

When and why did you decide to join the beauty industry?
I'm not really sure. I was headed to sign up for the nursing program, but when I came out, I had signed up for Cosmetology. Thank God!! I guess from the looks of my Barbie dolls haircuts, I needed a little further training.

Where did you receive your training?
I began beauty school at The St. Mary's Tech Center while still in highschool. I completed the program in '84'.
.
What do you like best about the industry?
This is the most AMAZING industry! I like the fact that I can get up every morning, and I can't wait to get to work! A lot of people can't say that. I've been in this business for 25 years, and more passionate today than ever!
Where else can you work that you can play dress up everyday, you get to socialize with your friends (guests) all day, you make people feel beautiful and happy, and get paid for it?

I not only enjoy my time behind the chair as a stylist, but I really like the challenges of marketing, advertising, and training as well. But what I enjoy the most is working with the newer stylist. There is nothing more gratifying than watching them grow and become Rock Star Stylist, and know you helped them get there.

Why did you choose The Hair Company to call home?
I needed a nice place to work. Somewhere there was a future for me, as well as any staff that came to work for us. When Debbie & I couldn't find 'that salon', we decided to buy ourselves a job, and opened The Hair Company.

What services do you enjoy performing the most?
I think the most enjoyable service I can perform would be a 'Total Transformation'. Where I can sit down and really find out what the guest wants, what's achievable, and come up with a plan to get there. This typically involves a cut, color, waxing, & make up application. The service isn't complete until I'm sure they know how to recreate their look at home, and know what products they need to maintain that look.

Why do you think it is important to take advanced training?
After 25 years, I'm still learning. If I'm not constantly learning something new, If I'm bored, my guest will get bored with me! If I'm not attending or hosting a class, I am reading something industry related, attending a online seminar, or listening to one of the 400 plus audio training books on my ipod. Yes, you can say I'm a bit obsessed! I feel that in this business, when you feel like you know it all....it's time to get out!

What advanced training have you received?
I would need my own website just to list all the training I've had. But I will put down a few hilights from my life as a professional student.
Redken Exchange NYC (several times)
Redken Symposium, Las Vegas.
The Summit (management) Minneapolis, MN
KRS How to open a Beauty School, Tampa, FL
Gary Harland (business), NColor Salon, Naples Florida
The Redken Master Specialist Program (twice)
bB University (network educator program) NYC

All of the in salon classes offered at The Hair Company. But most awesome was Michael Cole and Sam Villa. However, the were all amazing!

Also working with our business consultant, Gavin, is always a learning experience. He really makes me look at our business through a different set of eyes, and keeps (or at least tries) me on track.

What does customer service/satisfaction mean to you?
There are a lot of choices out there for our guests, and I know this. Giving a quality service (technically) is what should be the 'norm'. Customer Service/satisfaction is 'WOWING' our guest by giving them a memorable 'experience'.Treating them with concern and care, and truly listening to what they want. It is also important to be realistic with them. And always under-promise, and over-deliver.

Do you have a mentor/role model? Why do you chose that person?
I was fortunate to grow up with amazing role models...my parents. I have never met anyone that works as hard as they do/have. Being raised in a family where your parents, as well as their siblings, are all in business for themselves, made me think that that was what you did. There  was never really any other way.
Although my parents have worked 7 days a week as long as I can remember, and even when times were tough, they always made time to do for others. They've been extremely involved with the community, and continue to volunteer their time and services. I hope one day to carry on that family tradition.
I've also been fortunate enough to be in the beauty industry at the same time as some of the most amazing educators & consultants . Michael Cole & Randy Kunkle have had a profound affect on our business practices. Roy Peters, Sam Villa, and Chris Baran have taught me amazing principles of hair color and design. I only hope to be as great as they are someday.

If you weren't in the beauty industry, what would you be doing?
Six feet under! I can't imagine doing anything else!

What are your goals?
Professionally: To do hair as a hobby, and to grow people for a living. I really want to offer the next generation of service providers a future. I want to make available things to them that weren't an option for me early in the business.
Personally: To raise my three children to have the passion, determination, & drive that I didn't get until later in life. Hopefully, they can get it early enough that they can retire young and enjoy life.
